Garry Large (2019-09-16)

Low growing ground cover plants are an ideal way of covering the soil between shrubs and trees in the border. Choose plants which are ground hugging and also can cope with the occasional trampling; you will have to tread on them to carry out upkeep to other plants. Try and select plants with foliage that will contrast with the additional plants, so that they set one another off. An under planting of bulbs will provide seasonal variation and interest, tulips, spring flowering dwarf narcissi and autumn flowering colchicums are suitable. Some plants for example heather also have flowers to enhance their appearance.

Ground cover can also be useful for areas where grass is just not practical. For instance, calcium is useful on slopes that will be difficult to mow, while vinca minor is great for awkward areas at the bottom of a fence or alongside a driveway. Ground cover plants also make a low maintenance option in the front garden. Several ground cove plants, for example cotoneaster and prostrate junipers, produce stiff spreading foliage, which lends itself to covering eyesores such as sell manhole cover ( published a blog post) covers or ugly tree stumps.

Although ground cover will prevent weeds from establishing, they do need to be planted into weed free ground to begin with. The very best time for you to plant is autumn. Prepare the ground by digging thoroughly and removing weeds, such as the roots of perennial weeds. Incorporate well rotted manure as well as a handful of bone meal per square meter yard. Take care not to damage the roots of existing plants in the event that you are planting between or under them. When planting ground cover, do so either through a mulch matting or mulch after planting with a 3 inches thick layer of loose organic mulch to prevent weeds from germinating before the ground cover can do the job.

The distance between each of the ground cover plants will depend on the vigor of the plant you've got chosen and the way long you are prepared to wait for complete cover. Obviously, the closer the spacing the more plants you will need and the costlier it shall be. Good ground cover plants should remain pest and disease free and require little upkeep, other than a yearly tidy up. This really is nest done in late autumn when deciduous leaves that have become trapped within the stems may be collected. A chemical weed killer is best used to kill persistent weeds when first preparing a bed. Avoid using chemicals nest fruit, vegetables or herbs. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packet.
